Heating Bill Help Still Available

Even though winter is getting close to ending, heating bill help is still available thanks to the federal government and your state government. More families than in years past are now eligible to receive assistance through the federal government Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. This federally funded program will give struggling households and families grants and money to help them pay their winter heating bills. The program is typically administered through local community action partners and groups around the nation to get eligible people the assistance they need.

As an example of one state, so far this winter season, 138,000 New Jersey families have received over $78 million in LIHEAP aid. If this seems like a lot of aid, it is. Because of the growing need for help in New Jersey, the federal government provided New Jersey with almost $80 million more in LIHEAP funding this year than last year. The expansion of the LIHEAP program will now allow approximately 50,000 more New Jersey households to be eligible for help this winter season with their winter heating bills.

While the exact amount of a LIHEAP heating benefit and grant is determined by a number of factors including household size, income and home heating fuel type, it can be safely said that everyone across the nation who is eligible for assistance this year will get more aid and money than they would have received last year.
